Well, I must disagree with this, Chess is one of the only games which could be seen as "perfect".

It is the most balanced, strategical and beautiful game there is. But you need to know a lot of Chess in order to come to this conclusion.

I am a chess master and have competed in many tournaments. All but my first, I won. I love chess, I think it is a great game with many practical uses outside of the game itself. I don't believe it is perfect because I don't believe in perfect, there is always something that could be done better. That is my opinion and nothing you can say will change it. So lets not get into a massive argument about it, please.

I believe reading somewhere on some inherent problems Chess had, but can't quite remember what those were or where I read that. Anyways, nothing's perfect.
On board games, I've played chess, shogi, risk, and a couple of other random tabletop games, since I frequented a hobby store and the owner would frequently try new games with the clients.
Also, I'm an avid Magic: The gathering player, wich is a card game, so I don't know if that counts as a board game.
Lol at games making you board. Razz

I am also a magic the gathering player (I use a green-white deck) and I used to be a yu-gi-oh and pokemon player, I am now waiting for the cards to appreciate in value, I have some pretty rare cards, that sell for much more than their initial cost.

If you are waiting for cards to appreciate in value you're doing it wrong. Most of the cards never rise in value after their standard life, so unless you've got some really old and hard to find stuff. (1993-1994 sets) I doubt wou'll have anything of value, ever.

I started with a Red White, Time spiral deck, but started putting together my unbeatable green white deck. I don't really know what to do with my old cards though, I have many limited edition cards, so I am seeing if some collectors want them, at the moment I have 2 offers, but not much, so I am waiting for to see if they increase their price or not.

Um, this seems to be trading card games now, not boardgames.

Allow me to put the discussion back on the right course?

to put a discussion on the right course, you need to talk about it, not just say so.

Yes, I love Monopoly!

4 players is best, with less it just takes too long and gets confusing.

How about Scrabble? And what's the highest scoring word you remember placing on it?

Mine's QUARK.

Re: The Board Game Thread

Post by iliander on Sat 13 Aug 2011 - 7:19

I just invented a magnificent variation on chess!

I tried numerous times before, but they failed each and every time, UNLIKE THIS ONE!

It's played on a 10x10 board instead on an orthodox 8x8 board, so you can easily use a checkers board. Because of the increased size of the board, Pawns can now choose to move 1, 2 or 3 spaces on their first move, even when a Pawn has already moved 1 space, it can still move 2 spaces, but not 3 anymore. The placement of the pieces stays the same, except that there're 2 new ones, the Bunny and the Guard. The Bunny is quite an unusual piece, but brilliant. It can jump over a piece and keep jumping over others, even chile changing direction. When totally isolated (when it can't jump over pieces, so when it cannot move) it gains the ability to just move 1 space diagonally. The Bunny is placed on the corners of the field, next to the Rook. The Guard is another new piece, he acts like a super Pawn, and can move exactly the same as the King, 1 space in any direction (both diagonally and straight). He can also take other pieces in the same way he moves. But he's got 1 weakness, when attacked, he can only take another piece, so he cannot move normally (this is due to the fact that in real-life, a guard doesn't run away form a fight, but also just to balance the new piece). The Guard is placed 1 space above the Bunny, starting and ending the row of Pawns. The main reason why I added the Guard, is because he guards the Rook, it's needed since a new strategy evolved, in which a Queen or Bishop could doom the Rook by attacking it form the other side of the board (the Bishop will still take advantage form it, since he's worth 3 points, and the Rook 5). There's also a second castle kingside, when the King has not yet moved after castling with a Rook, he can castle kingside again with the Guard (only if the Guard has not moved yet) by moving the King 2 spaces to the left/right (depends to what side you castled) and moving the Guard 1 space to the South-West/South-East (also depending on what side you castled). The Bunny will be worth 4 points, and the Guard 2 points.

This variation is both balanced and exiting, it brings new strategies, especially with the Bunny. It's not better than the orthodox chess, it's just an excellent way to vary your chess experience, since it's possible to get bored from the normal chess for some while... If so, you MUST try this one! The only things you need, are a checkers board, a piece which could resemble a bunny, and another piece which looks similar to a Pawn, but still "greater", or just more powerful. Another beauty of this variation, is the following:

Imagine... Your Rooks are the borders of your castle, they're the towers surrounding your stables (Knights), churches (Bishops) and the king's/queen's chamber (King and Queen). But then next to the towers, on the outside of the castle, is the garden, and guess what piece inhabits that spot? The BUNNY! :lol:

PS: Did you know, that the Bishop originally represented an elephant (instead of the actual bishop which doesn't make sense)? They later mistook the Elephant's 2 tusks for the hat of a bishop!

EDIT: Do they call the Bishop an Imam in Islamic countries? Question

I am great at chess, I have been the top chess player in my school since two years ago. I am always selected to go to inter-school chess tournaments and the like. The only time I ever lose, is purposefully to help people with low self-esteem and teaching chess. I didn't comment on your version of chess because I don't like it and didn't want to hurt your feelings.

I don't read it because it is too solid to be read by me.

But, I'm not good in chess.

@Nero: It doesn't hurt my feelings at all. Wink But it's hard to explain the beauty of it in written words. You really need to see it in real-life, it's a perfectly (almost) balanced variation on chess, which is rare. Also, the 10x10 board gives way to new and unique strategies. The Bunny is also an amazing piece, since your best way to use them efficiently, is to bring your Pawns (actually all pieces) in a certain position so that the Bunny can simply hop over them and eventually take the enemy's Queen when he wasn't paying attention. It's really a fun variation, and it certainly doesn't destroy chess.

But there's 1 issue, when you've played 4-5 games of the Centurion Chess (I call is like that Razz), and play a game of normal chess afterwards, the board looks horribly small!!!!! :lol: But actually it's positive, you can see all lines much better, so the 10x10 chess is an excellent practice. Razz

@Pepp: How do you call the chess pieces in Indonesian?

The chess game called 'catur' which in old Javanese language/Kawi language means '4th'.

The pieces called as peon. King and queen still the same, the fort called benteng, horse called kuda, bishop called menteri (which is minister in English), small peon called prajurit.

Re: The Board Game Thread

Interesting, in Dutch they are:

Pawn = Pion (means Pawn, but I'm not sure)
Knight = Paard (means Horse)
Bishop = Loper (means Runner)
Rook = Toren (means Tower)
Queen = Dame (means Lady)
King = Koning (means King)

But the thing they actually resemble is this (chess originates in India):

Pawn = Foot Soldier
Knight = Horseman
Bishop = War Elephant
Rook = Chariot
Queen = General
King = King
