New Warships Class

Post by Pepp on Wed 11 May 2011 - 2:07

1. Cog <Ship>
A warship, alike caravel:

http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~vaucher/Genealogy/Documents/Asia/Ships/Cog.jpg
http://www.bandhmodels.com/myfiles/image/RV05411.JPG
Fast History: Cog were an ancestor of the caravel (and later carack). They're not a real warship, but rather an armored merchant ship. Cog was light, but not so fast, as he had only 1 sail. It is armored by archer, as it is too light for a ballista or something else. The cogs (Dutch: Kogge) mainly employed by north and west Europeans. They are the power of the Hanseatic League.
Attribute: Similar to caravel.

2. Longship/Knarr <ship>
Warship again, alike a fune or a wokou junk:

http://www.mandragore2.net/dico/lexique2/navires2/vikings-knarr-2-gd.jpg
Fast History: With the spread of the Norsemen, their ship spread too. The Longship where used by some north European civilization, mainly in the middle age are (of course) Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. They're fast, armored by archer.

Unique Upgrade:
1. For Italian, they can upgrade their galley into galleass.
2. For Byzantine, they can upgrade their galley into dromon.

Isn't cogs mainly used for trading?
Longship was mainly used by Norwegians and Danes in battles, Swedish vikings were not so warlike as the others.

I like it. But I'm not sure about the Italian upgrade, it is too much the same as the unupgraded version.

Cog were used for trade, but later they are fortified for war purpose (according to a book).

Cogs were used for trade, but had cannons to defend their cargo.

Cogs definitely need to be included - they were important ships not just used for trading but also for warfare. The Battle of the Sluys is a good example of a battle between cogs. Cogs were used all around Europe too. Although they were more common in Northern Europe, they did appear in the Mediterranean as well. Other ships to consider:

- The Galleass is a must have
- So are longships
- And dromons (though they aren't really a unique upgrade of the galley as they were around from the start of the medieval era.
- The Carrack should also appear (rather than the caravel, which looks like a carrack in game anyway)
- Plenty of galleys (used all around Europe)
- Roundships (Predecessors for the cogs)

Well, as you might know, we don't have 3D models aplenty for ships, so we're rather limited in our possibilities. We used to have a ship called simply 'Light Ship' that looked like a cog anyway, so we've already renamed it to Cog. As for Galleys and Carracks, they've always been planned. And yes, the Vikings will get Longboats.

Well, ships don't have many animations, so it's perfectly possible to import ships from other games/ modelling programs, if you've got the knowledge, of course...

They are supposed to break up when sinking, and new models don't do that. You'll find K&B has far more problems with new models than WotTA, due to our higher expectations. New native or HC buildings and new attachments are fine, but as soon as anims are lacking, we won't use it.
