They seem to be really good divers to remain underwater there for so long...

No, it was a continent, not only Plato talks about it.

I like the general idea of a sunken continent, and considering what we know about the deep sea (almost nothing, we know more about outer space) it's not impossible that it has actually existed. Obviously I'm not a great fan of the idea that some writers have that all things irrational have to have originated in Atlantis, but I don't dislike the idea of the island itself, and the Greek colony there.

Yes, but it shouldn't be about liking the idea or not liking it, it's about evidence, if you like it or not. Razz But most ancient civilizations claimed that there once was a world-wide flood. And the stories are very similar. If you look at the Sumerian flood story, it's almost exactly the same as in the Bible.

The similarities in the flood stories just might say that the Christian theology (With it's stories) were directly influenced by older civilizations. Nothing more. Just how Muslims saw that Christians were just like them, because they were "people of the book".

Actually, there is a sunken continent, but it's too far from anything to be really the mythical Atlantis. It is called the Kerguelen Plateau if anyone wonders. It's actually more curious the fact that R'lyeh of Lovecraft's mythos is vaguely around that place...

The fact that there's various mentions of a global flood has nothing to do with a sunken continent, so I see no relation really?
It's true though, as with the fact that nearly all cultures have myths regarding vampires/dragons/ghosts in one way or another... from that to the fact that they existed, there's quite a large distance.
Now I really urge you to read that book.

Well, the theory in AoM is quite plausible, that the Ionic city-states were Atlantean colonies. And if the tectonic plates were ripped apart, then Atlantis could have sunk down... It would have happened slowly, so the Atlanteans had time to escape to Africa and Asia Minor.

I think the early Atlanteans will have been quite rough and savage, though, not some amazing, intellectual civilisation.

Savage? No, they had a very advanced technology, more advanced than ours today. But there seems to be another sunken continent much before Atlantis, Lemuria! But you should read the interesting Vimana part in the book!

Lemuria was an hypothesis put forward by some 19th century biologists to explain the widespreadness of primates. It failed and is no longer scientifically valid.

Yes, everything is part of history.
I doubt it will cause major repercussions globably, but it will certainly be an important event on the zone's politics and history.

You seem to be very appaled by the prospect of having war in your country. Weird...
Anyways, between the Argentineans blockading Falklands and Russia taking down USA's Missiles, I have a feeling a new war in America and/or Europe is very close, I hope this doesn't go too far...

I'd find it very hard to believe that a war is ever going to occur again in Europe as long as the EU exists, which is likely to be for at least a hundred more years. I guess the Georgian-Russian conflict is going to erupt again though, and by the time Belarus becomes a free country, there's bound to be some violence there. I'd find it very hard to believe that Gibraltar or the Falklands is ever going to erupt into a war again, that would be pointless for whoever starts it anyway.

It is a hard time for West European and North American to go war. They are in a monetary crisis now.

War in Europe is the most funniest things I've heard for a while, I agree with Agent 407 that it won't happen as long as EU exists. And anyways, wars between other countries seem to be getting more and more rare...

I also agree with Mrs Nun that there is going to be another recession, if we won't be able to control it. It also seems that oddly, such a small country as Finland is, has a big importance on this...

Re: The History Thread

Post by The Flying Dutchman on Fri 6 Apr 2012 - 2:35

I for one would nominate the Middle Ages as well as the Modern Era as being the historical periods that have influenced the humanity the most. The Contemporary Era was, by me at least, just a prologue for that is going to happen in the near future. I won't agree though with his 407ness regarding the war in Europe as being a thing of the past. In my humble opinion I think that sometime, not quite in the following decades but in the following centuries, a new war in Europe will occur again as usual...

I suppose any period is a prologue for what will happen in its near future, given that pretty much all of history is cause and effect...
